The restoration of the coastal dunes

The coastal dunes, for example those at Piémanson (Salin-de-Giraud), are being eroded by the sea, whose level is inexorably rising. They are also regularly traversed by hordes of holidaymakers. The idea of countering this problem by the installation of sand traps was suggested by the park authorities to a steering committee which includes representatives of the State (the coast belongs to the Domaine Public Maritime), the town of Arles, and users of the beaches. Nature-conservation campaigns have been set in motion to build "Ganivelles", i.e. palisades of wooden slats arranged in such a way as to hold back the sand, and also plantations of "oyat" (marram grass), whose roots hold the sand in place.
