October 1993 – a flood that brought back memories

The floods of 1993-1994 demonstrated the limitations of the Dykes on the Rhône, and served as a reminder that, where natural disasters are concerned, there is no such thing as total security. In just a few days, breaches along the banks of the Petit Rhône led to the flooding of 12,500 hectares, i.e. some 8% of the delta. And the situation was worse again in the lower-lying northern part of the delta. But many other factors – including the poor state of maintenance of the Dykes – also came into play, and the severity of the flooding revived the age-old debate about management practices. The authorities came up with an action plan for the inspection and upkeep of the Dykes, a mechanism for triggering alerts, an information campaign, and new building regulations.
