Skills and traditions

The exploitation of natural resources and the resistance of the delta to human encroachments have led to the development of local expertise in areas such as hunting, fishing, reed harvesting and the breeding of bulls ("Bouvine") and horses. These different activities contribute to the binding together of communities within which knowledge is passed on from member to member and from generation to generation. The Confrérie des Gardians was founded in 1512, and since then its vocation has been to promote the Gardians' mutual interests. Marquis Folco de Baroncelli and Joseph d'Arbaud institutionalised this local identity when, in 1909, they created the "nacioun Gardiano" association, with the aim of promoting traditions, the Provençal language and local costumes. The now-famous "Gardians" are members of this association as of right.
