Forests

Trees currently cover only 3% of the delta. They formerly occupied a much larger area, though their extension was naturally limited by the salinity of the soil. Deciduous forests are now confined to the banks of the Grand Rhône and the Petit Rhône, along with some now-detached arms of the river, for example at Ulmet, to the east of Vaccarès, or Saint-Ferréol, to the north. Trees growing close to the river are subject to flooding, but they are also luxuriant, and there is dense undergrowth. The most prolific species is the white poplar.
The forests of the Petite Camargue are very different in character. They occupy the dunes, and are essentially composed of parasol pines.
