Marshes

These diversified environments are generally supplied with fresh, or just slightly brackish, water by a network of channels ("Roubines"). The deepest of them, for example around the larger étangs (Scamandre, Vaccarès), have large reed beds, and are of great interest to ornithologists, with ducks in winter, herons and passerines in spring. In the shallower marshes there are irises, bulrushes and, during the frequent dry periods, a remarkable flora that is well adapted to hydrological contrasts.
Water management in the marshes is influenced by the interests of waterfowl hunters, and sometimes also by conservation considerations, or by the reed-harvesting industry.
