Landscapes marked by the river and the sea

As regards the relative influence of the Rhône and the Mediterranean, the delta can be divided into three zones. The northern part, where the influence of the river is strongest, was formerly a territory of fresh water marshes, "Pelouses" (pastures) and woods. It is also known as the "fluvio-lacustrine" Camargue – that of river and lakes. The central part, which is more affected by the sea and the presence of salt, has dunes, Lagoons and Sansouires, and is known as the "laguno-marine" Camargue. The sea exerts a preponderant influence over the coastal Camargue.
But in practice this division of the delta into three zones is no more than a rough approximation, given that the different systems interpenetrate to a considerable extent. The final result is a mosaic of great diversity.
