Particular conditions apply to bulls that are to take part in the corrida. The breeding of Spanish bulls requires considerable experience, and the selection process aims at producing animals that are as combative as possible. For this purpose, it is essential that they be presented in the arena without any previous experience of people, or of fighting. The first such animals were introduced into the Camargue in 1869, and since then new blood has been brought in to improve the local stock. Techniques continue to develop, and there are now a number of Manades in the delta.
