Sheep

The main breed of sheep in the Camargue is the Arles merino, a cross between the local Arles breed and the Spanish merino, which is known for the fineness of its wool. Under the competitive pressure of synthetic fibres, wool has lost some of its commercial value, but the Arles merino also gives high-quality meat. Most of the herds are currently to be found in the eastern part of the delta and the Crau plain.
