The vineyards of the Camargue are flooded each year for 40 to 50 days. This practice began at the end of the 19th century, as a way of combating the phylloxera problem. Grape production reached a peak in the 1930s, with close to 8,000 hectares. Since then, it has been declining, except in the Petite Camargue, with its "vin de sable" (literally, "sand wine").
