A region where farming is difficult

Though the Rhône delta has long been a source of game and fish, but also wild plants, agriculture began to develop there only in the mid-19th century. With the river frequently overflowing, storms blowing in from the sea, and the salinity of the soil, generations of effort proved fruitless, and only the large landowners were able to make farming economically viable. Then, in the middle of the 19th century, the meanders of the Rhône and the incursions of the sea were brought under control by the construction of Dykes, along with the development of irrigation and drainage systems. This made it possible to extend the cultivation of cereals, grapes and, over the last 50 years, rice.
